2024 September #10: Lichtenberg

Lichtenberg is a Kietz in the east. Took the S-Bahn there and walked around. Large concentration of Soviet-era tenement blocks, but also a small neighborhood with villas and a nice park with a lake..

Neighboring the park is a Mies Van Der Rohe house that's open for viewing:

Couple random thoughts occurred today.

1) There are probably over a million bicycles in Berlin; it is the primary mode of transport for a good percentage of the population. They're mostly old beaters, at least in Friedrichshain. There is a a correspondlingly high concentration of bike sales & repair shops. I would have thought given the condition and quantity of the bikes they'd be cheap…they're not. 400e (roughly $400) and up!

2) Here's how much oil we've drilled in the U.S. over the past 20+ years. We're now one of the leading exporters. Huh.
